Visiting a hospital in Japan may feel unfamiliar—but knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and prepared.

1. Before Your Appointment

  • Make a reservation by phone or online.
  • Bring your health insurance card, residence card, and referral letter if needed.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete paperwork.

2. At Reception

  • Present your insurance card and ID.
  • Fill out a medical questionnaire (available in multiple languages at some hospitals).
  • Ask if interpreter services are available if needed.

3. During the Consultation

  • The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history.
  • You may undergo tests or receive prescriptions.
  • If you don’t understand something, ask for clarification—many doctors are patient and willing to help.

4. After the Appointment

  • Pay your bill at the cashier counter (usually 30% of the total cost if insured).
  • Receive your prescription and visit a nearby pharmacy.
  • Keep your receipt and medical records for future visits.
