Visiting a hospital in Japan may feel unfamiliar—but knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and prepared.
1. Before Your Appointment
- Make a reservation by phone or online.
- Bring your health insurance card, residence card, and referral letter if needed.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete paperwork.
2. At Reception
- Present your insurance card and ID.
- Fill out a medical questionnaire (available in multiple languages at some hospitals).
- Ask if interpreter services are available if needed.
3. During the Consultation
- The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history.
- You may undergo tests or receive prescriptions.
- If you don’t understand something, ask for clarification—many doctors are patient and willing to help.
4. After the Appointment
- Pay your bill at the cashier counter (usually 30% of the total cost if insured).
- Receive your prescription and visit a nearby pharmacy.
- Keep your receipt and medical records for future visits.
