Japan’s healthcare system is affordable—but understanding how it works is key to avoiding surprises.
1. Public Health Insurance System
Japan’s healthcare system is partially funded by public insurance. Most residents, including foreign residents, are required to enroll in either National Health Insurance or Employee Health Insurance.
2. Coverage Rate
National Health Insurance typically covers 70% of medical costs. You pay the remaining 30% at the hospital or clinic.
3. High-Cost Medical Expense Benefi
If your monthly medical expenses exceed a certain threshold, the High-Cost Medical Expense Benefit (Kōgaku Ryōyōhi Seido) limits your out-of-pocket payments. You can apply through your local city office.
4. What to Bring to Appointments
Always bring your health insurance card. Without it, you may be charged the full amount. Also bring your residence card and any referral documents if applicable.
